“I love the tactile nature of illustrating and painting.”
Welcome! I’m Martine Felton, an artist, illustrator, and writer with a passion for capturing the beauty and charm of everyday life. My journey as an artist began with acrylic paints four years ago, but over time, my interests gravitated to mixed media, finding joy in blending different materials and techniques to create layered, textured pieces.
Nature, children, animals, femininity, and the simple moments we often overlook are the primary sources of inspiration for my work.
Art has always been a part of my life. In high school, art and photography were my favorite classes. I always loved the class trips to the museums every year. From a young age, I was drawn to colors, textures, and the way art allows us to communicate emotions and ideas beyond words. I began experimenting with acrylics, fascinated by their versatility and boldness. Acrylic paints allowed me to express in an abstract way, and it really helped that the paint dried quickly because I was always ready to layer things on top.
As I continued to explore, I found myself experimenting more with mixed media techniques. This discovery opened up a new world of possibilities. I started integrating different materials like ink, watercolor, colored pencils, and collage elements into my work. The layering process—combining these various media—allowed me to add depth and texture, transforming simple sketches into dynamic pieces with a sense of storytelling.
Nature has always been one of my greatest inspirations. Whether it's the intricate details of a leaf, the soft movement of clouds, or the vibrant colors of a blooming flower, I find endless beauty in the natural world. I’m equally inspired by the innocence and wonder of children and animals. Their uninhibited curiosity and joy remind me to see the world with fresh eyes, capturing the small yet meaningful moments that often go unnoticed.
My Process
My creative process begins with pencil sketching. I always have my sketchbook with me, ready to capture ideas, fleeting moments, or interesting compositions. The sketchbook is my playground, a place where I can experiment with lines, shapes, and color combinations without any pressure. From there, I develop these sketches into full illustrations or paintings, layering different media to create the finished piece.
I love the tactile nature of mixed media—there’s something about the way ink interacts with watercolor, or how a piece of textured paper can completely transform the feel of a work, that keeps the process fresh and exciting for me.
Why I Create
Creating art and writing is my way of connecting with the world. I believe that in our fast-paced lives, we sometimes lose sight of the beauty in the little things. My goal is to remind people of those small but magical moments, whether it's the simple joy of seeing a butterfly land on a flower or the warmth of a shared moment with a loved one.
Through my art, I hope to inspire others to slow down, take notice, and find wonder in art.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my work. I invite you to explore my shop and gallery and join me on this creative journey.
with love and gratitude
Martine
